Lens Usage

The Lens Usage tab controls the first step of the customer lens configurator wizard. Here you define the available lens types customers can choose from, such as single vision (distance, computer, reading), varifocal, or bifocal lenses.

Lens usage options represent the primary lens type the customer needs. They appear as the first decision point in the configurator wizard.

Default options typically include:

  • Single Vision Distance
  • Single Vision Computer
  • Single Vision Reading
  • Varifocal
  • Bifocal

Each option can have its own price surcharge and description shown to customers.

  1. Click the Add Option button at the top-right of the Lens Usage section

  2. Fill in the required fields:

    • Name (required) — The customer-facing name, e.g., “Single Vision Distance”
    • ID (auto-generated) — A unique identifier based on the name. Cannot be changed after creation
    • Description — Brief text shown to customers explaining the option
    • Lab PDF Label — Custom label for this option on the Lab Order PDF. If empty, the option name is used
    • Price (required) — Additional cost for this option. Use 0 for no surcharge
    • Enabled — Toggle to show/hide this option in the customer wizard
  3. Click Add Option to save

  1. Click the pencil icon next to the option you want to edit
  2. Update any fields (except ID, which is locked after creation)
  3. Click Save Changes
  1. Click the trash icon next to the option
  2. Confirm the deletion when prompted

Deleted options cannot be recovered. If customers have already placed orders with this option, consider disabling it instead.

You can change the order in which options appear to customers by dragging and dropping using the handle icon (three horizontal lines) on the left of each option.

The order you set here determines the display order in Step 1 of the wizard.

Use the toggle switch on each option to enable or disable it without deleting it.

Disabled options will not appear in the customer wizard but remain in your settings for future use. This is useful for seasonal options or testing new lens types.

Each lens usage option includes the following fields:

FieldRequiredDescription
NameYesCustomer-facing name displayed in the wizard (e.g., “Single Vision Distance”)
IDYesUnique identifier, auto-generated from the name. Cannot be changed after creation
DescriptionNoBrief explanation shown to customers to help them choose
Lab PDF LabelNoCustom label used on the Lab Order PDF. Defaults to the option name if empty
PriceYesAdditional cost for this option. Use 0 for included options
EnabledYesControls whether this option appears in the customer wizard

You can configure pricing in several ways:

  • Base option at £0 — Single Vision Distance at no additional cost
  • Surcharges for specialty lenses — Varifocal at +£50, Bifocal at +£30
  • All options at £0 — If lens costs are included in the frame price

The price shown here is the base lens usage surcharge. Additional costs (varifocal types, coatings, tints, etc.) are configured in their respective tabs.

Avoid technical jargon. Use names like:

  • “Single Vision Distance” instead of “SV Distance Only”
  • “Varifocal” or “Progressive” instead of “PAL”
  • “Reading Glasses” instead of “SV Near”

Good descriptions help customers make informed decisions:

  • “For distance vision correction” (Single Vision Distance)
  • “Optimized for computer and intermediate distance” (Single Vision Computer)
  • “For close-up reading and near vision” (Single Vision Reading)
  • “Progressive lenses for all distances” (Varifocal)
  • “Two distinct viewing areas for distance and near” (Bifocal)

When a customer selects “Varifocal” in Step 1, they will be prompted with an additional follow-up step to choose a varifocal type (Basic, Advanced, Elite, Occupational).

Configure these options on the Varifocal Types page.

In Step 1 of the wizard, customers see:

  • Option name as the main heading
  • Description text below the name
  • Price surcharge (if applicable) displayed clearly
  • Enabled options only

The order of display matches the sort order you set via drag and drop.
